Abstract
This paper presents a failure detection and isolation (FDI) technique suitable for implementation in a self-repairing flight control system (SRFCS). The FDI employs simplex optimization procedure for on-line estimation of the system parameters affected by battle damage, thus providing the basis for the implementation of a variable-structure controller to augment surface commands due to surface impairments. In addition, the suggested FDI provides failure information to a positive pilot alert (PPA) system. The approach was verified by computer simulations which showed that characteristics of an impaired system can be dramatically improved by FDI and SRFCS
