Abstract
Summary form only given. The design of high average power solid-state rod laser systems operating at high gains leads to large amount of power deposited into small diameter rods as excess heat. A detailed study of the thermal and energetic performance of corresponding uniform diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG rod systems was motivated by discrepancies in various published YAG thermomechanical parameters resulting in large differences (1.5/spl times/) between calculated and measured thermal lensing and birefringence depolarization.
