  • Abstract
The market for collaborative conferencing technologies is expanding in different directions, with low-cost computer-based solutions and hardware intensive high-definition (HD) multi-screen “telepresence” environments at opposite ends of the spectrum. In each case there is a growing need to make distance learning environments more natural and effective for Instructors and participants alike. This paper will summarize the state of the technology as it is applied today, and evaluate the audiovisual systems currently implemented in several types of distance learning environments. We will then explore the potential for improvement, both through new technologies, and with new implementation methods.
