Abstract
This paper presents the design of a variable reluctance motor with a multi-flux guided solid rotor. The analysis of the magnetic circuit and calculation of the machine inductances are carried out using the finite element method (FEM). This allows the prediction of machine performances and the optimum design parameters which maximises Ld and minimises Lq. Based on the design, an experimental machine is fabricated. The experimental motor has been tested and its performance compared with an equivalent induction motor as a variable speed drive
