Abstract
Object-based segmentation is a popular and key technology in video processing field. Its applications are extended to video retrieval, video index, visual communication, remote sensing, virtual reality, etc. The quality of segmentation affects the following process. Currently, object-based segmentation technology is still premature. This article gives an overview of existing techniques for object-based segmentation. The performance, merits and limitations of some important and advanced methods are discussed and contrasted. As a conclusion, the paper proposes several problems for further study.
