Abstract
Low power radio is suitable for purely local signalling since it has a restricted range; the same frequencies can be used again within a sensible distance. Some of the first experiments in its use were in North America where a touring van read the meters in passing. It used frequencies in a band around 945 MHz, which gave a reasonable limited range. The author discusses frequency allocation for remote metering and other forms of remote metering such as using the telephone line or mains signalling
