  • Abstract
STATCOM, Hybrid and Classic SVC solutions are used to improve efficiency and reliability in Saudi transmission grid. Today there are 13 utility SVCs in service in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The plan is to reach 30 FACTS devices (STATCOM, Hybrid and Classic SVCs) in a few years´ time, having a total capacitive rating of more than 12000 MVAr. In design of FACTS devices for the Kingdom, difficulties due to the fast evolving power grid have to be tackled. Details of changes in grid topology are not well known for more than just a few years ahead. This paper describes challenges in the Saudi power grid, discussing STATCOM, Hybrid and Classic SVC technologies and grid requirements to ensure improved efficiency and reliability in Saudi transmission grid.
