Abstract
This paper presents an adaptive radiation pattern controlled antenna for handset terminals to reduce the correlation coefficient between antennas in diversity reception and to enhance the channel capacity in MIMO applications. Chip-sized analog phase shifters are introduced to control the antenna pattern to improve reception characteristics under multi-path environment. A pair of inverted-F shaped antennas combined by a phase shifter provides a single port with adaptive controlled patterns, and the performance of two sets of them are compared with two inverted-F shaped antennas installed on a handset terminal. The correlation coefficient and channel capacity are evaluated by assuming Croneker scattering under Nakagami-Rice propagation model, which demonstrates the proposed pattern control method enhances the channel capacity. This compact array geometry is suitable for handset MIMO transmission.
