Abstract
A simplified formulation to assess the performance of an optical receiver, which takes into account the impact of polarisation dependent loss (PDL) on the signal mean and signal-beat noise variance, is proposed. Exact expressions for the mean and variance of the receiver output current in presence of partially polarised noise due to PDL are presented. The receiver performance is evaluated through the Q-factor and its dependence on the angle between signal and noise polarisations and on the noise degree of polarisation is assessed.
