Abstract
In this paper, the resource sharing between on/off voice traffic and long-range dependent (LRD) video traffic over a wireless local area networks (WLAN) is analytically investigated. We consider a distributed medium access control (MAC) which provisions service differentiation by assigning different contention windows to different classes, where mobile nodes belonging to different classes may have heterogeneous traffic arrival processes with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. We have developed a generic analytical model in the work of Cheng et al. (2007) for evaluating the statistical multiplexing effect, admission region, and contention window design over the multiclass DCF MAC. In this paper, the model is applied to investigate the video/voice integrated WLAN. Specifically, the impact of the LRD voice traffic on the voice admission region is analytically demonstrated, and the optimal contention window configurations for maximum resource utilization are calculated. To the best of our knowledge, no similar analytical work on the LRD traffic over WLAN is currently available in the literature.
