Abstract
Based on the fact that the spectrum of a scrambled bit sequence is independent on the statistical properties of the signal to be transmitted, a new device, the spectrum discriminator is introduced. This device can be used as a very effective acquisition aid in the carrier-recovery PLL of suppressed-carrier systems. Principles of operation, design methods, performance and measurement results are given. It is shown that besides of being applicable rather generally, the spectrum discriminator may considerably extend the domain of applicability of coherent systems.
