Abstract
The millimeter wavelength local multipoint distribution system (LMDS) has been proposed as a wireless access solution for high speed data service distribution to homes and small businesses. In this paper, a low cost multi-carrier LMDS system operating at the 28 GHz radio frequency band is investigated. The system uses adaptive code modulation of OFDM at PHY layer and contention based collision avoidance at MAC layer. An efficient cross layer link adaptation control scheme is proposed to increase the system´s efficiency, and to mitigate the effects of fading environment. The LMDS system performance is evaluated by mathematical analysis and numeric simulations. The purpose of this study is to create a framework for designing a robust, high data rate, low cost, and reliable millimeter wavelength wireless access system.
