Abstract
Because of fundamental differences in optical and electrical physics, optics has the potential to solve interconnect problems both on and off chip. Recent advances in integrating optics and optoelectronics with silicon chips promise technologies that may allow interconnects to scale with the integration level and clock speeds of future silicon.
