Abstract
A special class of linear codes, capable of correcting single errors in a two-dimensional lattice, is introduced. The codes, termed integer codes, are defined over integer rings and are capable of correcting single errors in a lattice with Manhattan distance 1. Three constructions are presented that specify perfect and optimal integer codes for a wide range of parameters, and the corresponding coding algorithms are given.
