  • Abstract
According to the old bridge damaged emergency conversion program, this study investigates the flow changes during the coexistence of old and new bridge and contraction effect. The flow rate between piers increasing, thereby accelerating erosion. This study uses SMS-2D unsteady flow model to simulate old pier into the pre-construction setting due to their contraction flows and further necessary hydraulic structures and facilities for scour protection on the main deep trough of Taitung Bridge in 100 years return flood peak flow, on the downstream BeiNan River in Taiwan as case study, thus, providing reliable information and references for bridge engineers.
