Abstract
An experimental study of the initiation of positive streamers under step voltage in a variety of hydrocarbon liquids is presented. The experimental conditions (point tip radius, pulse risetime, and gap length) required for obtaining valuable measurements of the initiation fields and threshold propagation voltages of streamers are defined. The results obtained are discussed with reference to the known properties of the liquids (ionization potentials and breakdown strength)
