Abstract
Cleavage patterns of high air-fraction, double-clad microstructured fibers (MSFs) are analyzed using fracture mechanics. Critical fracture depth is shown to be a measure explaining the different patterns and is proposed as a criterion to design cleavage-robust MSFs
