Abstract
We examine the difficulties facing applications using services built upon an inherently unreliable and variable platform. With reference to emerging platforms such as the virtual home environment of UMTS, Bluetooth, programmable and virtual networks, the main structural aspects and reconfiguration bottlenecks are illustrated, together with discussion of the modeling and analytical tools with which eventual solutions will be devised
