Abstract
Metropolitan area networks (MANs) provide a way of interconnecting LANs (local area networks) and large computers while simultaneously providing support to voice and video services. Standards work in IEEE Project 802.8 provides for a high-speed MAN that has unique scheduling and failure-tolerance properties. Particular attention is given to fast-packet-switch characteristics for the broadband ISDN (integrated-services digital-network)
