Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) wideband CDMA (WCDMA) concept selected by ETSI for the FDD component of UMTS terrestrial radio access (UTRA). The selection process was completed in January 1998 and the selection point started the actual technology refinement and specification work after the selection. The WCDMA concept selected for the UTRA FDD mode is based on direct sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) with 4.096 Mchips/s chip rate and is designed with both the flexibility to the third generation services and GSM compatibility in mind. This paper describes the main features of the UTRA FDD mode based on WCDMA technology
