Abstract
This paper presents a high frequency current technique based protection scheme, the boundary protection (BP) scheme, for series compensated EHV transmission lines. The principle and design of the proposed relay are described. The problems associated with the protection of series compensated lines, such as fault locations and capacitor protective devices are discussed. Simulation studies have been carried out to investigate the BP technique based relay scheme in typical series compensated transmission systems. The relay has shown satisfactory performances under various fault conditions and maintained stability and reliability for systems employing different types of capacitor protective devices. The technical feasibility and attractive economic advantages have been demonstrated
