Abstract
A rigorous implementation of Fourier operators is applied to the analysis of open dielectric waveguide devices. The method is exact and easily implemented using readily available numerical techniques. The method is applied to two problems of practical interest in integrated optics: (1) the analysis of reflection and transmission at a general slab waveguide discontinuity or as a special case, a laser facet; and (2) the scalar analysis of a rib waveguide. The solution is exact and a polarisation correction may be applied to yield polarised mode propagation constants
