Abstract
The application of Variable Speed Limits through Road Works (VSLrw) has the potential to improve both the safety and traffic flow issues associated with road works. In addition, driver compliance with speed limits at road works may be increased in response to the speed limits which are varied in accordance to current road conditions. This project focuses on the technology required, both for wireless operation and software control system, for the implementation and use of Variable Speed Limits through Road Works with the primary deliverable being a proof-of-concept demonstration system. Existing `off-the-shelf´ technology was used where possible in order to keep development costs to a minimum.
