  • Abstract
A new algorithm is developed for retrieval of surface UV radiation under realistic cloudiness conditions using GOME/ERS-2 data. This algorithm is based on a simple radiation model of the atmosphere and accounts for the UV radiation attenuation due to clouds and atmospheric aerosol. For validation of the suggested algorithm ground-truth measurements of biologically active UV incident radiation were used. The measurements were conducted at the Moscow University Meteorologocal Observatory for time period between March and November 1999 using a UV-B radiometer (UVB-1, Yankee Environmental Systems, Inc.). A mean relative difference between the retrieved and measured values over 273 days was assessed at 10.8%
