Abstract
Lighting is essentially required for a human being in his living place, wherever it might be. There are places where people live, however, where connectivity to these places with an electric grid system is almost impossible, for technical or economic reasons. The isolation is apprehended to be certain under disastrous conditions. This paper proposes a solar powered lantern for the lighting systems of flood-gripped, and hence isolated, areas. The design and construction principle of this lantern is presented in the paper. It investigates the performance characteristics of the proposed lantern. This paper also presents a comparison of the proposed lantern with the conventional lighting system, hurricane lantern and candle, in terms of both cost and performance
