Abstract
Nowadays, forward error correction (FEC) is widely used in communication systems for error detection and correction. This paper is a brief introduction about FECs. We firstly introduced the basic principles of FECs and how it works. Different types of FECs are used for different conditions. We compared some of the most widely used FEC codes, for example, linear block code, cyclic codes, CRC code, BCH code, convolutional code, and explained their benefits and drawbacks. Based on these, we focused on the FEC applications both in Internet - the WAN, and in wireless communications - the Broadcast. At last, we did some research on the latest development of FECs.
