Abstract
Issues which arise in the design of a synchronous transmission system are discussed. The present state and likely evolution of telecommunication network synchronization is reviewed. The synchronization approach adopted in the SONET draft standard is described. The duration of the output phase transient produced by a SONET byte stuff is analyzed.<>
