Abstract
The operation-speed of intersecting waveguide type optical modulators/switches is shown to depend, besides the commonly known device-capacitance, on the propagation-time difference of the guided mode spatial plane-wave components. Further, in fast pulse operations, the modulating information signals applied to the electrode must be properly synchronized to the optical ones.
