Abstract
Having nonzero Poynting vector and Minkowski momentum density vector (MMDV) which cast positive projections onto each other is a necessary condition for electromagnetic fields to propagate in a medium. So it can be a basis to classify media where electromagnetic fields cannot propagate. As an example, the real and imaginary parts of the MMDV of homogeneous plane waves are derived in terms of the Poynting vector and the wave vector and it is proved that the wave vector is parallel to the MMDV. Therefore, for propagating homogeneous plane waves, the wave vector and the Poynting vector cannot be mutually orthogonal.
