Abstract
The purpose of this investigative study is to develop a model for a system of systems to improve situation awareness and targeting through a real-time aerially deployed wireless sensor network. The main hypothesis of this work is that scalable, affordable, real-time wireless network can contribute to the common operating picture. This network can be used to overcome targeting discrepancies and counter asymmetric threats in the new warfare paradigm that pertains to opaque environments. Surveys identified requirements for a system of systems to meet requirements for situation assessment. This paper describes 1. a model to support the hypothesis that this network can to improve response to asymmetric threats, and 2. a system architecture based on commercial-off-the-shelf technology for military operations in this new combat paradigm.
