Abstract
The authors give an overview of the application of fuzzy logic technology (FLT) to the intelligent highway system (IHS) and, more specifically, to one of its essential components, the intelligent vehicle (IV). They show that the IV/IHS effort encompasses tasks ranging from straightforward control engineering problems to the complex interplay of control, communication and decision which characterizes the information and management systems in which the driver-vehicle system is embedded. The role of FLT in the IV/IHS effort is discussed. In particular, the status of the effort and current trends are highlighted by reviewing and discussing some representative papers from two conferences on the subject
