Abstract
A new hybrid spread spectrum/TDMA access protocol for wideband CDMA is introduced. Each TDMA frame is somewhat longer than an access probe, and includes several overlapping but offset in time (by an interval called minislot) access probe slots assigned to specific registered mobile users. All registered mobile users use the same spreading sequence to spread their respective access probes. Separate detection of access probes is possible due to the suitable time offsets between them. The performance of the access protocol is compared with an access protocol similar to the one used in IS-95 and W-CDMA, based on slotted ALOHA. It is shown that the new protocol has superior performance at different values of offered traffic
