Abstract
In radio communication applications, the important specifications for a local oscillator are oscillation amplitude, phase-noise, and power consumption. Exact expressions for oscillation amplitude have been derived for Colpitts oscillators implemented with MOS transistors. Simple relationships relating amplitude to bias current and LC-tank duality factor, as well as the transistor´s aspect ratio, make the estimation of power consumption a straight forward exercise
