  • Abstract
The paper presents a multiresolution video compression technique for HDTV. The technique of multiresolution encoding in the context of a DPCM encoder loop with motion estimation and compensation is described. The quantizer is presented in more detail since it uses techniques based on the human visual system for bit rate control. Results from simulations of HDTV coding at different bit rates are presented. It is shown that subband or multiresolution coding techniques offer a viable alternative to the more conventional discrete cosine transform (DCT) based coding while resulting in video sequences which are free of block effects at low bit rates
