Abstract
Placing thousands of videos into multiple storage disk arrays is considered a tedious but major task in the centralized video-on-demand system. This time-consuming task is handled by experienced operators. The solution is hence sub-optimal and operator-dependent. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to tackle this problem and to allocate the video automatically. The advantages of using GA are its elegance and simplicity of procedures, as well as the ability to handle different system constraints and optimize the multiple objectives.
