Abstract
In order to understand fundamentally the electrical properties of the suspensions with and without an electrorheological (ER) effect under D.C. field the following phenomena have been examined experimentally: the electrical behaviour of insulating liquids, the electrophoretic effect of particles, the electric conduction characteristics under a non-uniform field and the ER responses. It is considered that the rheological mechanisms of the ER suspension may be attributed to the conductivity of the disperse and continuous phases. It may also be attributed to the ionic interfacial activity involving the polarization of dispersed particles
