Abstract
Philips have been pioneers in the implementation of the bitstream conversion technique for high performance digital audio digital-to-analogue (D/A) converters. This paper discusses the principles of bitstream conversion and the development of the first bitstream stereo analogue-to-digital (A/D) converter from Philips. This device consists of a input buffer which can be configured by the user for pre-scaling and anti-aliasing filtering, a third order sigma delta modulator with a performance of better tan 90 dB total harmonic distortion (THD)+noise, and decimation filters with anti-aliasing suppression of greater than 93 dB and inband ripple of less than 0.0002 dB. The device outputs data in a number of selectable formats
