Abstract
BT is introducing WDM into its core network with two pilot schemes due to carry live traffic from 1998 summer. These are unique in that they employ 1+1 optical multiplex section protection and are capable of carrying both PDH and SDH traffic. In order to ensure that the WDM system does not degrade the performance of the traffic carried over it BT is undertaking full integration testing of the WDM systems with its existing transmission systems. This is providing valuable experience and an understanding of optical network issues
