EMC and transients an introduction

This paper is intended to provide engineers with a very basic introduction to power system transients and to lay some groundwork for the following papers. To obtain a basic understanding of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and transients, it is essential to study three aspects: the origin/sources of transients; the way they propagate/couple into sensitive electronics; and the hardness of the circuits under threat. This paper covers each of these three aspects in turn
