Abstract
In this paper it is shown theoretically and experimentally that by contouring the open end of a microstrip line improved open circuit characteristics may be obtained. To this end a model based on the method of moments solution of the appropriate MPIE using triangular basis functions is obtained. With this approach microstrip elements of arbitrary shape may be modeled in a multilayered structure with excellent accuracy. Microstrip open ends with rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular and elliptical contours are modeled using this approach which leads to the optimum open end shape. In addition, highly accurate experimental techniques are developed and adopted to verify the practical value of the theoretical model.
