Modern Language Information Technologies: How they Help Japanese Students

There are several universities in Japan where English is the official language of instruction. Japanese students are expected to read numerous scientific papers and books in English as well as write reports using their second language. This paper presents different language information technologies that support students in their study. We investigate features of Web technologies and hand-held devices. We conducted a survey among first and second year students to analyze how they use technologies to improve their comprehension of teaching materials. From the results, we conclude the following: students have to be trained to ensure that they know the details of the technologies and to apply them in practice
