Abstract
In this paper, we propose an interactive e-learning system with dialogue. The task is exercises of functions of Microsoft Excel for first-year technical college students. It has been pointed out the inadequacy of their communication skills in recent years. For example, students without skill of inquiry can not ask someone a clear question. The purpose of this research is not only effective learning but also enhancement of their communication skills through our system. By displaying question patterns in the case that the question of a user is vague, our system can boost up the student´s skill of inquiry. First, our system analyzes a user´s input by using a speech recognizer. Then, it controls the dialogue by using a state transition model. The transition model contains five states, initial, system request, user question, initiative change and error states. We evaluate the prototype system with 12 test subjects. The experimental result shows the effectiveness of the system, as compared with a self-instructional training approach.
