MultiBase: a heterogeneous multidatabase management system

MultiBase is a heterogeneous multidatabase management system that is being developed in the R&D Division of the Institute for Information Industry. The goal of the system is to provide high transparency of networks and local DBMSs for applications to access heterogeneous databases in a network environment. To achieve the goal, we make efforts on the following tasks. First, we develop a tool called the Schema Editor for users to define global schemas by integrating some related local schemas. The integrating information is kept in a repository. We also provide a standard SQL interface for users to manipulate the data objects under the well-defined global schema. A compiler parses and analyzes each SQL command, and converts it into a global execution plan (GEP). The GEP is executed under the distributed cooperative computation model.
