Abstract
MultiBase is a heterogeneous multidatabase management system that is being developed in the R&D Division of the Institute for Information Industry. The goal of the system is to provide high transparency of networks and local DBMSs for applications to access heterogeneous databases in a network environment. To achieve the goal, we make efforts on the following tasks. First, we develop a tool called the Schema Editor for users to define global schemas by integrating some related local schemas. The integrating information is kept in a repository. We also provide a standard SQL interface for users to manipulate the data objects under the well-defined global schema. A compiler parses and analyzes each SQL command, and converts it into a global execution plan (GEP). The GEP is executed under the distributed cooperative computation model. In this paper, we focus on the architecture of the system and on some implementation techniques developed in the system
