Abstract
Summary from only given. In our experiment the plasma wave is excited by a two-wavelength CO/sub 2/ laser pulse operating on 10.6 /spl mu/m and 10.3 /spl mu/m. The pulse contains /spl sim/ 100 J of energy in 100 ps and is focussed by an Off-Axis Parabola (OAP). Intensities up to 6 x 10/sup 15/ W/cm/sup 2/ (normalized field amplitude a /spl cong/ 0.6) are obtained and plasmas formed by tunneling ionization in H/sub 2/, Ar, and He are produced.
