Abstract
This paper describes the chaotic behavior of the optimal multiplier for the Newton-Raphson (NR) method in power systems. The optimal multiplier was originally developed for the power flow calculation under ill-conditioned power systems. However, it does not necessarily work under heavy-loaded conditions in spite of the improved convergence characteristics. This paper focuses on the relationship between the divergence of the optimal multiplier and chaos phenomena. The detection of chaos phenomena is investigated in a sample system
