  • Abstract
Summertime microclimates of Paris and Los Angeles are analyzed in order to better understand the physical processes that determine the energy fluxes and their interaction at the urban surface. Statistical images are extracted from time series of NOAA-AVHRR thermal IR images. They reveal distinct temporal and spatial microclimates characteristics. Fractional images of land-cover classification are constructed from multispectral SPOT images, using GIS systems. This data fusion shows: 1) the influence of land-cover, especially in downtown business and industrial districts that display heat-islands larger than 8°C; 2) the temperate effect of water; 3) the negative correlation between afternoon surface temperatures and fractional vegetation index, which confirms the cooling effect of urban parks
