  • Abstract
This paper presents a novel active current shaper, called hereinafter a load compensator (LSTATCOM), for a 12-pulse diode converter. The LSTATCOM injects compensation current through a split winding interphase reactor connected on DC bus of the 12-pulse converter. It is desired that the LSTATCOM provides sinusoidal shaping of the source currents for an output load varying over a wide range. The proposed LSTATCOM should be capable of overcoming the problems of voltage unbalance and transformer design defects. This paper develops a novel technique to make the LSTATCOM inherently capable of addressing these power quality issues. To simulate the dynamic and steady state performance of the converter with the proposed LSTATCOM, a detailed mathematical model of the system is developed. A thorough investigation of the simulation results reveals that the proposed LSTATCOM provides sinusoidal shaped source currents while keeping the system power-factor pegged at unity for a wide range of conditions.
