Abstract
We propose various schemes for traffic shaping design in the ATM network. First, for guaranteed lossless traffic shaping, we study an optimal traffic shaper design that can minimize the network resource requirement and show that the worst-case node delay of this optimal traffic shaper is not larger than the delay when no traffic shaper is used. Secondly, unlike those previous works on traffic shaping in which lossless service is guaranteed, we propose allowing small loss probability at the shaper. Thirdly, we study the condition under which statistical shaping is more beneficial for reducing the network resources than lossless shaping
