Abstract
Planar amplifiers, based on EDWA (erbium doped waveguide amplifier) technology, are now reliable and commercially available, but there are still significant scientific and design activities involved in their development. After a review of their current performance and typical applications, I will describe their potential and their limitations and compare the different technologies involved.
