Abstract
A waveguide structure using surface plasmon polaritons that can change the optical polarization of nanometric spot size is proposed and simulated. The proposed structure employs mode-coupling between two surface plasmon polariton (SPP) gap waveguides (SPGWs) that are adjacently placed in an orthogonal configuration. The guided SPP excited in one of the SPGWs is transferred to the other SPGW by mode-coupling. Since the polarizations of propagation modes in the SPGWs in this configuration are orthogonal to each other, the modecoupling can produce a change in polarization of pi/2 radians. Scattering of optical waves by this structure is solved numerically using a volume integral equation. The dependence of coupling length on the gap-size is investigated numerically.
